Arctic Blast Envelops the Great White North as America Sees Most Unseasonably Mild Christmas Ever.

An intense cold spell has seized a bitter and extended period of frigid weather, with thermometers lingering between -20C and -40C for an extended duration. A reading of -55.7 Celsius was logged in Braeburn, Yukon, on Tuesday, its coldest December temperature in half a century.

Consecutive Nights Below -40C

Similarly, the communities of Mayo and Dawson experienced sixteen nights in a row below -40C, with Mayo plunging to -50.4C on Monday. Whitehorse also recorded 10 nights when the cold dipped under -30 Celsius.

The deep freeze spread farther south over the festive period. On Christmas Day, overnight temperatures in Edmonton fell below -28C.

The day after Christmas was forecast to deliver lows of at least -20C in numerous areas, encompassing cities from Edmonton to Quebec.

Likely to Linger into the New Year

This harsh winter weather is expected to continue into the new year. There are warnings of possible electrical grid strain in Yukon territory in the coming days, as its energy infrastructure faces unprecedented demand from record-high energy demand.

The prolonged chill has been caused by the polar vortex remaining anchored over Canada for much of December, which funnels frigid northern air southward. The frigid dome is projected to gradually withdraw north slowly, permitting warmer Pacific winds to flow over the US and into parts of southern Canada.

Dramatic Difference Compared to Stateside Temperatures

Meanwhile, in a dramatic contrast, areas of the United States saw their warmest Christmas Day on record as temperatures soared about 15-30C above the seasonal average. Across wide regions, the atmosphere was more akin to late spring than late December.

A number of states broke historical records for December 25th warmth. In Oklahoma, Oklahoma City hit 25C on Tuesday, surpassing the previous peak of 22C set in 1982. Metropolitan areas such as Austin, Dallas, and Charlotte also logged readings above 25 degrees Celsius.

Atmospheric Ridge Sustains High Temperatures

Above-average warmth is expected to continue for the remainder of the week and beyond, with abnormal warmth projected to move into the south-eastern states later in the week.

This heat is being driven by a strong upper-level ridge reaching from the arid southwest across the continent, which generates a heat-dome phenomenon. This setup creates an extensive zone of high atmospheric pressure over a large portion of North America, effectively capping warm air at lower altitudes. Sinking atmospheric air undergoes compression and additional heating, enabling abnormally high temperatures to develop.
