Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
