Coaching an Infant to Grow into an 'English Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Cost?

Child education concept
The firm behind the listing states that what looks like "extravagance or peculiarity" is in fact "intentional investment in early-stage education".

"A family located in the northern part of London seeks an exceptional and experienced educator to support their smallest child on his initial journey to growing into an British gentleman."

Upon seeing this post, you might easily miss the wording "initial stages" as simple figurative language.

However, it might be the most important aspect of this unusual position posting, as it aims to hire a mentor for a 12-month-old.

Numerous of submissions have now been sent in since the anonymous family posted their call for the £180k-a-year tutor, who needs to be "someone very special".

During the past few weeks, the advert has attracted attention across the press, with many questioning why?

Innovative Idea

Adam Caller, head and founder of Tutors International, which is supporting the family in their search, said that despite first doubt, he viewed the idea "far sighted", and "advanced".

When he spoke with the family, he noted they understood the atypical character of their request, and how immature their son is.

However, they clarified that they "preferred not to postpone any longer" to hire a tutor, as they had held off until their older child was five, and by that stage "cultural conditioning had already become established".

What exactly does the family mean by "cultural predisposition"?

It's "all-encompassing", the expert responded. "The manner you eat, how you speak".

He stated the older sibling had adopted "extremely delicate, body language" from the family, and had adopted their cultural ways. The family informed the consultant they wished to avoid history to happen again with their new baby.

The plan: To bring in a British tutor, who should speak with RP, to guide the baby from the very start.

Tutoring discussion
The education firm state the advert has initiated a larger conversation about how parents regard learning, elitism and the function of cultural environment in education.

Subtle Influence

"A great deal of the education at the beginning here is somewhat acquired indirectly," stated Adam.

It's through this natural absorption that the family are aiming the child will acquire the British traits they aim to instil.

He noted the tutor had to be an individual who studied at "the appropriate educational institutions – the same kinds of schools as the family aspire to send their son to".

"The tutor must be the suitable individual, they'll be performing things they don't even know they're doing, just naturally," he said.

Cost Not Relevant

The family informed Adam the successful candidate should preferably also have familiarity of or interest in riding, winter sports, the arts and music so as to inspire the child in a wide range of interests.

More than that though, he stated the family hoped the tutor to sign up the child on a range of courses so the child would be "horseback riding and starting an musical instrument by the time they are approximately three years old".

In the family's view, guiding their son develop into a "English gentleman" will result in accomplishment and create opportunities.

"Taking into account the pros and cons of that, because it's undoubtedly a status symbol," he comments.

Yet, despite all this tutelage in "Britishness", would the child pick up so-called cultural influence from the globally influenced family he lives with anyway?

"Yes", said Adam. "The parents know this may not work, but they've just taken the view of, 'why not attempt it and we'll proceed as soon as we can', because the price of it is not relevant," he stated.

Impractical

A number of in the private teaching field who express similar concerns.

Another CEO, CEO and founder of a tutoring service, who provides private tutors, commented that "the journey of adopting dual cultures, or indeed, forming one's identity, is something that must be experienced personally, not designed."

Peter wrote that he had emigrated from Asia to the United Kingdom at the period of 7 years old, and had been raised knowing and embodying two backgrounds. He went on to be educated at the University of Cambridge.

Peter Cui portrait
Peter Cui was the pioneer originating from the People's Republic of China to be chosen to the role of Treasurer of the Cambridge Union Society.

"The concept that an individual can function as a representation of UK identity, a person who can somehow transplant the attributes of a British gentleman upon a one-year-old child, seems to me idealistic and unrealistic," he wrote.

"From my perspective, having a distinctly British tutor from infancy will does not necessarily produce the result they want.

"I wasn't provided with such a tutor, and yet I have been lucky enough to enjoy numerous of the opportunities they desire for their son."

He added: "The fact is, self-identity cannot be imposed from the outside; it must be chosen, and it must be internally driven."

Buying Britishness

Of course, Britishness is something Adam thinks can be instructed – and sold.

"I think the reality that the international society views us in this regard is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
