Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
