Disney's Real-Life <em>Moana</em> Trailer Looks Remarkably Similar to a Cartoon
The debut preview for the upcoming real-life version of Moana has arrived. Would you believe that, similar to most of Disney's live-action remakes, it appears a lot like an animated film and much less like a true live-action movie?
Spectacular Imagery Which Keep an Animated Feel
The preview for the latest version of Moana is undeniably stunning. It includes grand visuals, gorgeous soundtrack, and familiar personalities. Yet, it still appears like an animated film. The exaggerated effects show figures soaring, water defying gravity, and Maui changing into an insect and a winged creature. Each of these effects is achieved through digital effects and computer animation. Similar to previous Disney adaptations—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the level of animation is so extensive that it prompts the debate: what defines these movies “live-action” besides the marketing term?
Narrative and Songs Fans Adore
Regardless, this latest Moana appears to be a reimagining of the first story, including new renditions of the beloved musical numbers. According to an released synopsis, “Moana heeds the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, travels beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui on an memorable journey to bring back prosperity to her people.”
New Cast and Returning Stars
Meanwhile, the teaser features a snippet of the new take on “How Far I’ll Go,” sung by Catherine Laga'aia. The young actress is taking over the role of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who portrayed the heroine in the original movies.
A key figure who hasn’t been replaced is Dwayne Johnson, who will once again be portraying Maui. Of course, that character already looked like Johnson, so casting him in the real-life version seems reasonable.
Fan Favorite Character Shows Up
Perhaps the most important part of the trailer arrives in the last scene. Moana's beloved chicken Hei Hei makes an appearance, screaming at the camera. What better way to present the movie’s true mascot?
