Forest striker in action
The Brazilian forward has now scored eleven strikes in every tournament for Nottingham Forest this season.

Match Summary

  • Forest were previously qualified to the play-offs.
  • A Ferencvaros defender deflection gives hosts a opening period lead.
  • The striker's European strike puts the team in control.
  • Striker adds a third with a sharp finish in the second half.
  • The midfielder caps a excellent display with a spot-kick.

The Brazilian attacker scored twice as Nottingham Forest concluded the group stage of the European competition with a convincing win against their Hungarian visitors at the City Ground.

Forest had already secured a berth in the next qualifying round and entered this game with a slim possibility of reaching the top eight, although they needed other matches to fall in their favor.

Those results failed to materialize but this assured display will give Forest fans confidence that their side can come through the home-and-away tie to advance to the round of sixteen.

A Ferencvaros midfielder did hit the upright with a header inside the first 10 minutes for the visitors – who are managed by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from that point forward.

Forest opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Ryan Yates' cross was turned into his own net by Bence Otvos and added a second four minutes later – Jesus squeezing a shot in at the far post for his 10th goal of the campaign.

Jesus' 11th came soon after the restart when he timed a run perfectly to escape the backline and then drive an effort past the shot-stopper.

That goal killed off the visitors' aspirations of mounting a recovery and instead the hosts added a fourth when the impressive McAtee scored from a penalty after a foul by the unfortunate Bence Otvos inside the box on Dan Ndoye.

The Europa League knockout phase play-off draw is scheduled on Friday, 30 January (12:00 GMT), where Forest could be drawn against either Fenerbahce or Panathinaikos.

"It is not just the result, there was that feel about it. I want these players to do collectively well, the entire team," said manager Sean Dyche.

"That was another stride forward, but it is a good step."

Team Breakdown: Striker Shines as Recent Arrival Observes from Stands

Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in Europe this term with six of his 11 goals scored in the tournament.

This double also means he has got a trio of strikes in his last two games and the threat of competition for his place in attack could be providing motivation.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was recently brought in temporarily and he was watching this game from the directors' box.

This development may well have been on the striker's thoughts as he was outstanding against the opposition, delivering two excellent goals and generally being a menace to the opposition backline with his pace and movement.

Jesus was not alone in impressing, with James McAtee producing his finest display in a Nottingham Forest shirt since joining from Manchester City in the previous transfer window, while Dan Ndoye also impressed.

These encouraging performances will give the club some renewed optimism as they turn their attention to increasing the gap from the bottom three when they welcome Crystal Palace on Sunday.

"The minimum requirement is a response," continued the manager.

"I have always trusted their commitment or their loyalty or honesty. It is just about displaying your quality.

"McAtee was very good and Dan Ndoye was super sharp. Jesus got another couple and these are positive indicators."
