Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of documents involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Administration Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and image appear in some of the documents, the widespread redactions raise significant concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater openness.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure
However, some rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet a few are not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled some rightwing voices to launch the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these files for months only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the right was relatively muted after the release, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a bill mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were provided physical binders of files that contained little new data.
