Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with several in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
