New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities issued security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
