Slot Insists He Feels Safe and Has Liverpool's Support After PSV Defeat
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it's expected for questions to be raised about his future following a further heavy loss against the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their 9th defeat in twelve matches, marking the team's poorest streak since being demoted in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Eredivisie title holders on a tough night at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I am OK, I've received significant support from management,” Slot stated.
“It's important to change things and earn three points naturally but when you're coaching a team and underperforming then it is normal that people question you.”
He added, “I accept my situation. This isn't the initial instance I've found myself in a tough spot but it is about time that we changed our fortunes.”
Talks with The Board
When asked to expand on his discussions with the club's leadership, Slot said:
“We talk a lot. They are helpful for the squad and to me and we have those conversations but they don’t call me constantly each day to say they back me.”
He mentioned, “In the normal exchanges I sense the trust. However I haven’t spoken to them since this match yet so it remains to be seen.”
Persistent Failings and Squad Response
The manager lamented familiar failings from his team in their Champions League defeat, namely missed opportunities and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more direct in his view of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the answers. Truthfully, I do not. I’m saying that to everyone,” Jones remarked.
“It's simply unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to think about it. I’m past getting mad inside. I’m at the point now where I simply lack the words.”
He went on, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the side I follow. I support them, and I've watched this club all my life.”
“In a long, long time, I've not seen a Liverpool team going through a spell such as this with results like these.”
Jones concluded, “But we continue to wear the crest on our shirts. And as long as that badge is taken away, we’re always going to battle.”
“We will attempt to help the side back to where it needs to be, show everyone once more what Liverpool stands for and why people call it the greatest side in the planet.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and it needs to change.”
