Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
