The former England manager Shares Focus on Mentoring Young People Rather than Returning to Coaching
The esteemed football figure has stated that he is not seeking a comeback in football management, explaining that it would be tough to match the special mission he felt as the national team coach.
Southgate suggested his intention to focus his energy toward working with the youth and addressing what he labeled a dominant downbeat story now prevalent in the country.
Exploring Fresh Opportunities Beyond The Sport
Speaking on air, Southgate was questioned on speculation linking him with open coaching positions in the Premier League and other leagues.
“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he answered. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”
Dedication to Role Models
Leading up to the release of his upcoming book, his new work on leadership, the author emphasized that he is “very passionate” about setting examples for young people, drawing on insights from his time as head coach of the national side from 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.
The leader believes that his experience leading the national team, during which the team transformed from being widely disliked to widely supported, holds wider relevance.
“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he explained. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”
Raising Children and Shaping the Next Generation
Reflecting on his role as a parent, the coach commented: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”
He added: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”
Togetherness Beyond Conflict
Southgate asserted that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the public discourse often centers on conflict.
“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he said. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”
His new release, titled Dear England, is expected to offer additional perspectives on management and public spirit based on his notable professional journey.
