The Golden State is Completely Free of Drought for the First Time in a Quarter Century.
Following 25 long years, not a single part of California is enduring water scarcity. This landmark event arrives after difficult years marked by a lack of precipitation that intensified blaze threats and pressured its massive agricultural sector.
A Map Shows An Absence of Dryness
A recent update from the national drought tracker confirmed that all of California is clear of drought or abnormal dryness. This shift came after multiple above-normal rainfall that helped fill water storage sites like the state's largest lakes exceeding their historic averages.
“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a climate scientist.
Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons
The journey here included intense and deadly winter storms that struck the state in recent years, causing significant overflow, electrical failures, and deaths. Even though those events helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.
Even into late December, areas like the state's northeast corner were considered experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the start of the new year eliminated those remaining dry spots.
The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average
However, authorities caution that drought-free conditions should not be confused with being out of the woods. Latest data of the Sierra Nevada snowpack show it at approximately 70 percent of the typical level.
This frozen reservoir, which accounts for a significant portion of the state's usable water as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for future water availability. State experts stress that it is too early to make predictions for the coming year.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” said a hydrology section chief. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to improve by April 1st so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
While the drought map indicates no dryness, attention turns to preserving this positive water situation throughout the months to come.
