The Hit Drama Announced for 7th Series on the British Broadcaster
The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the BBC.
A brand new six-part season written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."
The last season concluded in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came this week.
New Challenges for AC-12
The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat corruption within the law enforcement.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case to date."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.
However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh season."
He added: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Actor Responses
The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."
"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."
Show History
The drama premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.
Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.
The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
