The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Icon, Dies at 81 Years of Age
The world mourns the passing of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican-born reggae singer and performer whose distinctive vocal talent was instrumental in popularizing reggae music worldwide. The artist has died at the age of eighty-one.
“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode and subsequent pneumonia,” wrote his wife Latifa on social media. “I am thankful for his family, close friends, fellow artists and coworkers who shared his life’s path. To all his fans around the world, please know that your encouragement was his motivation during his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” Her post was also signed by their offspring, their son and daughter.
Cliff gained fame for hit songs including “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, I Can See Clearly Now and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His optimistic sound and positive temperament earned him a large and longstanding fanbase.
Beyond his musical accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 crime drama The Harder They Come, a role that was highly acclaimed and is considered a landmark of Jamaican cinema.
Jimmy Cliff was one of just a handful of artists, alongside the legendary Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
