The Mystery Within the Case Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?

Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned inside a mental fortress forged from the memories of the villain Henry. Their mission for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—an event that may just hold the key to defeating him once and for all.

Editor's Note: The following reveals crucial plot points for the second part of the final season.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a spyglass found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma involved more than a fight for life.

Like many elements of the final season, the full story behind the encounter was first explored the stage play the prequel play.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who returned in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.

This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to give to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. That traitor in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Considering what is known about his research, the case would assuredly have vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, causing the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would genetically impart to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

Alternatively, the case could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day fundamentally changed. As a youth, he battles the whispers of a malevolent force, similar to how Will was controlled by the shadow monster in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave highlights how deeply scarring the event was for him. Even as he commands the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a showdown between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to become stronger.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a key upper hand in the endgame conflict to come.
