The Red Devils Poised to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major boost to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
