Why Real Madrid Have 'Total Confidence' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, featuring five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a crucial European match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

During his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and determination he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his career as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, each day you go to train and each day you have a game," said Pitarch after his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

The teenager has taken it with performances that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can see his capabilities," said the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are surprised to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through local academies before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the choice to represent either country at the highest level.

According to international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a official senior international match.

He has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club chase future success.

After his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to earn my minutes on the field," he said following the win at Manchester.
